Private label (MDD): how to get listed

Private label (MDD): how to get listedArticle

In brief. Listing an olive oil as a private label (MDD) — a retailer's own brand — imposes two blocking prerequisites: a food safety certification, IFS Food or BRCGS, and a complete supplier file (technical sheet, COA per batch, samples, supply capacity, landed price, consistency). Without IFS/BRC, the door to buying groups stays closed. Private label (OEM) lets you provide this file turnkey.

The MDD (private label) accounts for a significant share of olive oil shelves in retail. Getting listed there opens large recurring volumes — but the process is demanding and standardised. Here is how to structure your approach in 2026.

What is a private label (MDD)?

A private label (MDD) is a brand owned by the retailer (supermarket, chain, e-tailer), produced on its behalf by a supplier under private label. The consumer buys the retailer's name; the product is made and packed by a third party according to strict specifications.

For an exporter or a brand creator, supplying an MDD = accessing regular volumes through the retailer's distribution power, at the cost of high quality and documentary requirements. It's one of the three profiles served by private label (OEM).

The essential certifications: IFS and BRC

Two food safety standards are near-mandatory to list an MDD in European retail:

  • IFS Food — a standard heavily demanded by European retailers (indicative audit ~€4–7k ).
  • BRCGS — the British-origin equivalent, widely recognised (indicative audit ~£1,000–1,800 ).

Without one of these certifications, the door to buying groups stays closed: they are entry prerequisites, not "extras." Depending on the product and channel, add: ISO 22000 / HACCP (system), Ecocert / EU Organic 2018/848 (for an organic MDD), and the requirements specific to each export market (FDA/FSVP in the USA, Arabic label in the Gulf). Details in the quality process & certifications.

Under private label, these certifications are held by the packer, which spares you from obtaining and maintaining them yourself.

How to get listed: the 6 steps

  1. Target the right buying group — Identify the retailer/buying group and its positioning (entry level, premium, organic). The MDD specifications follow from it.
  2. Check the quality prerequisites — Confirm that you (or your packer) hold the required IFS/BRC, and the organic certifications if the MDD is organic.
  3. Assemble the supplier file — Product technical sheet, COA per batch, samples, certificates, supply capacity, traceability, landed price (incoterm specified).
  4. Respond to the specifications — The buying group imposes its specification (category, sensory profile, format, packaging, label under its brand). You comply to the letter.
  5. Samples & validation — The buying group tests your samples (lab + panel). A validated reference sample then serves to control each delivered batch.
  6. Negotiation & contracting — Volumes, price, incoterm, payment terms, penalties, consistency commitment. The MDD is won on reliability as much as on price.

The supplier file: what a buying group expects

A buying group assesses an MDD supplier on its ability to deliver, regularly, a constant quality, at the right price. Your file must demonstrate, with proof:

  • Quality compliance: IFS/BRC + IOC-accredited laboratory COA per batch.
  • Consistency: ability to reproduce the same profile at each campaign (reference sample, controlled blending).
  • Volume & supply: credible annual capacity, management of seasonality (harvest Oct.–Dec.) and of the EU quota (Tunisian contingent at 0%, exhausted every year).
  • Competitive landed price: dated quotation per format and incoterm, transparent cost structure.
  • Traceability & documentation: identified batches, export documents in order (invoice, packing list, B/L, EUR.1, COA).

The classic mistake: neglecting consistency

Many MDD candidates polish the first sample… then struggle to reproduce exactly the same profile in the next batch. For a buying group, a quality that varies from batch to batch is a deal-breaker: the retailer's shelf is at stake.

Hence the importance of a validated reference sample and controlled blending, checked by COA on each batch. The MDD rewards consistency, not just the best one-off tasting. This is also what separates a retained supplier from one dropped after the first delivery.

FAQ — Private label listing & retail

How do you get listed as a private label (MDD)?

Prepare a complete file: IFS/BRC certification, technical sheet, COA per batch, samples, supply capacity, landed price and consistency commitment. Target the right buying group, respond to its specifications, get your samples validated, then negotiate volumes, price and terms.

Do you need IFS or BRC for retail?

Yes. To list an MDD in European retail, IFS Food or BRCGS are near-mandatory: they are entry prerequisites. For direct sales, e-commerce or fine-food stores, they are not always required, but they reinforce trust.

What's the difference between MDD and private label?

Private label is the production mode (having a product made under a third-party label). The MDD is a special case: the label is the retailer's own. Every MDD is a private label, but not every private label is an MDD (you can launch your own brand).

How much does an IFS or BRC certification cost?

Indicatively: IFS Food audit ~€4–7k, BRCGS ~£1,000–1,800, excluding facility upgrades. Under private label, these certifications are held by the packer, which spares you the direct cost.

How do you manage seasonality for an MDD?

Anticipate: the harvest takes place from October to December and the EU quota (Tunisian contingent at 0%) is exhausted every year. Reserve your volumes early and secure your supply to keep your consistency commitment to the buying group.

Can you list an organic MDD?

Yes, provided you add organic certification (Ecocert / EU Organic 2018/848, USDA NOP for the USA) to the IFS/BRC file. Organic opens premium MDDs (Germany, USA) at a better margin. Certification attests to the production mode, not merely a test.
