Retail packaging of private label olive oil
In brief
The retail packaging of your private label olive oil is chosen on two criteria: protection of the product (against light and oxygen, olive oil's No. 1 enemies) and positioning (premium vs volume). Formats range from 250 ml to 5 L: dark glass (maximum light protection, premium), food-grade PET (light, volume, entry level), tinplate can (optimal preservation, opaque, food service), bag-in-box (vacuum pouch, e-commerce and volume). Useful density for your calculations: 1 L of oil ≈ 0.913 kg.
This page compares the formats, their impact on preservation and their positioning logic. For the full sequence, see the OEM process; for the mentions to carry on them, see labelling.
Why packaging decides shelf quality
A perfectly compliant extra virgin olive oil (acidity ≤ 0.80%, peroxide ≤ 20 mEq O₂/kg) can degrade after bottling if the container protects it poorly. Three factors accelerate ageing:
- Light — it triggers photo-oxidation, destroys carotenoids and chlorophyll, and drives up the peroxide value. It is the No. 1 enemy of an oil bottled in clear glass and displayed on the shelf.
- Oxygen — on contact with air (poorly filled bottle, non-airtight pouch), primary oxidation runs away: peroxide rises, polyphenols and fruitiness degrade.
- Heat — it accelerates all oxidation reactions.
The right packaging locks in the quality that the COA certified at the start. It is a selling point as much as a technical requirement.
The 4 main retail formats
| Format | Capacities | Light protection | Oxygen barrier | Positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dark glass (tinted Marasca/Dorica) | 250 / 500 / 750 ml / 1 L | High (dark glass) | Good (tamper-evident cap) | Premium, fine grocery, gift |
| Food-grade PET | 500 ml – 5 L | Low to medium | Medium | Volume, entry level |
| Tinplate can | 1 / 3 / 5 L | Total (opaque) | Excellent | Preservation, food service |
| Bag-in-box | 2 – 5 L (custom) | Total (opaque carton) | Excellent (vacuum pouch) | E-commerce, volume, HORECA |
Dark glass: the premium choice
Dark glass (tinted Marasca or Dorica bottles) is the signature of premium positioning. Its strengths:
- Protection against light thanks to the dark glass, which filters a large part of the spectrum responsible for photo-oxidation.
- No migration: glass is neutral and inert, with no interaction with the oil.
- Perception of quality: it is the expected format in fine grocery, corporate gifts and premium shelves.
Capacities: 250, 500, 750 ml and 1 L. Options that reinforce trust: anti-refill cap (non-refill), tamper-evident over-cap, screen printing, gift box. Reserve for ranges where margin takes priority over volume.
Food-grade PET: the volume format
PET (food-grade plastic) is the format for entry level and volume. Light, unbreakable, inexpensive, ideal for large formats up to 5 L and volume sales.
Its weak point: light protection is limited. A transparent PET displayed on the shelf poorly protects the oil from photo-oxidation. Two remedies: tinted/opaque PET and rapid stock rotation. PET suits price positioning, institutional catering and large domestic packaging — less so premium.
Tinplate can: maximum preservation
The metal (tinplate) can offers the best preservation: fully opaque, it blocks light 100% and forms an excellent oxygen barrier. It is the reference format for food service and markets where longevity is paramount.
Capacities: 1, 3 and 5 L. Square stackable can, pouring cap, integrated handle. It is often the best protection / price compromise per litre for large formats, favoured by catering and markets where oil is consumed quickly in the kitchen.
Bag-in-box: e-commerce and large volumes
The bag-in-box combines a flexible vacuum pouch (light and oxygen barrier) with an opaque carton with a tap. Its strength: the pouch collapses as you pour, limiting the oil's contact with air once opened — so extended preservation after opening.
Custom formats 2 to 5 L. Light, transport-resistant, economical in packaging: it is an ideal format for e-commerce, HORECA and volume ranges with modern positioning. The carton offers a large printing surface for brand storytelling.
Premium vs volume: how to decide
The choice of format reflects your strategy. Two opposing logics:
| Axis | Premium positioning | Volume positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Typical format | Dark glass 250–750 ml | PET / can / bag-in-box 1–5 L |
| Priority | Margin, image, gift | Price per litre, rotation |
| Channel | Fine grocery, gift, premium export | Mass retail, food service, e-commerce volume |
| Protection | High (dark glass + cap) | Variable (PET) to total (metal/BIB) |
| Message | Rarity, terroir, quality | Accessibility, convenience |
Many brands deploy several formats: a 500 ml dark glass bottle for image and a 3–5 L can for volume. The private label simulator prices each option in landed price and margin. See also all the available formats.
Options that make the difference
Whatever the format, these details reinforce perceived value and traceability:
- Anti-refill cap (non-refill) — prevents falsification by re-filling.
- Tamper-evident over-cap — guarantee of first opening.
- Dark / tinted glass — increased protection against light.
- Traceability QR code — plots, mill, lot COA accessible to the consumer.
- Gift box — for corporate gifts and premium e-commerce.
- Direct screen printing — a high-end alternative to the paper label.
Conversion reminder: 1 L of oil ≈ 0.913 kg — useful to estimate the palletised weight and the container fill.
FAQ — Private label olive oil packaging
Which packaging best protects olive oil?
The tinplate can and the bag-in-box offer maximum protection: fully opaque (light blocked 100%) and an excellent oxygen barrier. Dark glass protects well for a premium format. Transparent PET protects the least.
Why does light degrade olive oil?
Light triggers photo-oxidation: it destroys the pigments (chlorophyll, carotenoids), degrades polyphenols and drives up the peroxide value. An oil bottled in clear glass and displayed on the shelf ages much faster.
Does dark glass really change preservation?
Yes. Dark glass filters a large part of the light spectrum responsible for photo-oxidation, where clear glass lets everything through. For a premium positioning displayed on the shelf, it is a technical choice as much as an aesthetic one.
What formats do you offer in private label?
From 250 ml to 5 L: dark Marasca/Dorica glass (250 ml–1 L), PET (500 ml–5 L), tinplate can (1–5 L), bag-in-box (2–5 L custom), plus gift boxes and options.
Is PET a good choice for my brand?
PET is ideal for volume and entry level (light, unbreakable, economical, large formats). Its weak point is light protection: favour tinted/opaque PET and rapid rotation. To be avoided for premium positioning.
What is bag-in-box and who is it for?
It is a flexible vacuum pouch in an opaque carton with a tap. The pouch collapses as you pour, limiting contact with air: extended preservation after opening. Ideal for e-commerce, HORECA and volume ranges.
Does the metal can give the oil a taste?
No: food-grade tinplate cans are designed for food contact and olive oil. The metal, being opaque, on the contrary offers excellent protection against light and oxygen.
How to choose between premium and volume?
Premium favours dark glass 250–750 ml (margin, image, gift). Volume favours PET, can or bag-in-box 1–5 L (price per litre, rotation). Many brands deploy both: an image bottle + a large volume format.
Does packaging influence the stated shelf life?
Yes, indirectly: a container that protects better (opaque, airtight) preserves for longer the qualities certified in the COA. The best-before date is still to be set according to your tests; the format helps meet it.
Can the container be engraved or personalised?
Yes: direct screen printing (glass), carton printing (bag-in-box), gift box, traceability QR code, tamper-evident over-cap and anti-refill cap. For some markets (Gulf), dates can be engraved on the container.
How much does a pallet weigh depending on the format?
Use the density: 1 L of oil ≈ 0.913 kg. To this is added the weight of the packaging (heavy glass, medium metal, light PET/BIB). The simulator estimates the palletised weight and the container fill.
Does the format change the unit price?
Yes: premium glass costs more than PET or bag-in-box at equal capacity. The landed price combines oil, filling, packaging and logistics. Each option is priced in the private label simulator.
