What is organic certification of an olive oil?

Organic certification attests that an olive oil is produced according to an organic farming set of specifications — groves and mill without synthetic chemical inputs, with full traceability and no detected residues. It is a certification of the production method, controlled by an accredited body (Ecocert, CCPB…), not a simple laboratory chemical test. Without a valid certificate, no "organic" claim is legal on the label or documents.

Three standards dominate for export: the EU regulation 2018/848 (green leaf logo, European market), the USDA NOP (National Organic Program, US "organic" market) and, for any organic product entering the EU, the TRACES inspection certificate before every shipment. Cost from €400 for the EU audit.

What it is for and which markets require it

Organic is never optional once you sell "organic": the word is protected. It is required by:

  • The European market — "organic" claim regulated (EU 2018/848), Germany leading (Europe's 1st organic market). Organic certificate + TRACES inspection certificate mandatory.
  • The American market — "organic" claim reserved for products certified USDA NOP; EU organic alone is not enough (the EU-US equivalence nevertheless facilitates the add-on).
  • Premium channels — fine grocery, organic retail, specialised e-commerce, organic private label, where organic is a value and margin argument (premium ~+24%).

Safeguard: we never announce "organic" without a valid certificate (plots + mill). Organic is proven by a certificate from an accredited body and a number, not by a presumption of a "clean terroir". "Naturally clean" ≠ "certified organic".

Real cost & timeline of organic certification

The ranges below are orders of magnitude from accredited bodies, at the low end "from"; they vary according to site size and certifier. To be confirmed by quote — July 2026, to be verified.

Item Indicative cost Timeline Delivered by
EU 2018/848 organic certification audit from €400 to €950 3 to 12 months Accredited body (Ecocert Sfax, CCPB)
USDA NOP add-on (US market) +$500 to $1,500/year included in the cycle USDA-accredited body (via EU equivalence)
Grove conversion producer's agronomic cost 3 years (conversion period) — (prerequisite to the specifications)
TRACES inspection certificate included in organic certification before every EU shipment Your certification body
Renewal / annual audit recurring surveillance audit annual Certification body

The 3-year conversion period of the groves is the real timeline factor: a plot can only be certified organic after this conversion. A compliant mill and packaging, however, can be certified within a few months.

Body: Ecocert and accredited certifiers

Certification is delivered by an accredited certification body, independent, which audits plots, mill and packaging:

  • Ecocert — present in Sfax (Tunisia); downloadable certificate that can accompany the sample.
  • CCPB — another accredited body operating in Tunisia.
  • USDA NOP add-on — via the EU-US equivalence, by an accredited body, for the "organic" claim in the United States.

Each organic lot shipped carries its certificate number. It is this number, and not the logo alone, that attests organic status.

How to obtain organic certification (steps)

  1. Grove conversion — move the plots to organic management and respect the 3-year conversion period (agronomic prerequisite).
  2. Choose an accredited body (Ecocert, CCPB) and submit the file (plots, mill, traceability plan, separation of organic/conventional flows).
  3. Initial audit — on-site control of plots, extraction, separate storage and packaging.
  4. EU 2018/848 organic certificate delivered → "organic" claim and green leaf logo authorised, with certificate number.
  5. USDA NOP add-on if you target the United States ("organic" claim).
  6. TRACES inspection certificate to be created before every shipment to the EU.
  7. Annual surveillance audits to maintain certification.

The organic certificate is not enough for entry into the EU. You also need the TRACES inspection certificate, created before the vessel arrives. This is the most frequent oversight of first-time organic exporters — and it blocks the lot at port.

EFSA eligibility & dual health argument

Organic combines with a Tunisian quality asset: the high polyphenols of Chetoui often exceed 250 mg/kg, the threshold of the EFSA health claim (EU regulation 432/2012). Organic + polyphenols = dual argument for health and premium on target markets. The lot's COA confirms the value; the EU/EFSA claim, however, does not transpose as-is to American labels (FDA rules).

Interpret an analysis bulletin with the COA quality classifier and check the compliance of an organic label market by market.

Buyer side / seller side

Buyer side (importer, organic brand) Seller side (organic exporter)
Require the valid organic certificate (Ecocert/USDA/EU) with number, the lot's COA and, for the EU, the TRACES certificate before arrival. The logo alone proves nothing. Build value on the organic premium (~+24%) and the EFSA argument on your market. Never claim organic without a certificate (plots + mill). Trace separate storage, attach the certificate number per lot and prepare the TRACES before every EU shipment.

FAQ — Organic certification of olive oil

What exactly is organic certification of an olive oil?

It is the certification of a production method (groves + mill without synthetic chemical inputs), controlled by an accredited body according to a set of specifications — not a chemical test. It alone authorises the "organic" claim on the label and documents.

How much does organic certification of an olive oil cost?

From around €400 to €950 for the EU 2018/848 organic audit, plus $500 to $1,500/year for the USDA NOP add-on if you target the United States. Add annual surveillance audits and the agronomic cost of conversion.

How long does it take to certify an organic oil?

The certification audit takes 3 to 12 months, but the real timeline is the grove conversion: 3 years. A plot only becomes organic after this period. Plan accordingly if you start from conventional groves.

What is the difference between EU organic and USDA NOP?

EU organic 2018/848 (green leaf logo) governs the "organic" claim on the European market; USDA NOP governs the "organic" claim in the United States. EU organic alone is not enough to sell "organic" in the US, even though the EU-US equivalence facilitates the add-on.

What is the TRACES certificate and why is it mandatory?

TRACES is the electronic inspection certificate required for any organic product entering the EU, to be created before every shipment. Its absence blocks the lot at port, even with a valid organic certificate. It is the most frequent mistake of new organic exporters.

Who delivers organic certification in Tunisia?

Independent accredited bodies, notably Ecocert (present in Sfax) and CCPB. They audit the plots, the mill, separate storage and packaging, then deliver the certificate and its number.

Can you call an oil "organic" if the terroir is naturally clean?

No. "Naturally clean" (little or no chemistry) describes a practice; "organic" is a certification of the production method under control. We only sell as organic what is certified, never on mere presumption — it is a legal requirement and an integrity safeguard.

Does organic guarantee the absence of residues?

Certification requires the absence of synthetic inputs and control of the production method; in practice, synthetic residues are not detected (usual investigation threshold 0.01 mg/kg). The organic certificate and the lot's COA document this compliance.

Is organic compatible with the EFSA health claim?

Yes, and it is a dual argument. When polyphenols exceed 250 mg/kg (frequent with Chetoui), the oil is eligible for the EFSA health claim (EU 432/2012). Organic + polyphenols strengthen the premium positioning. The lot's COA confirms it.

Do you have to recertify every year?

Yes. Organic certification involves annual surveillance audits to be maintained, in addition to the initial audit. The certificate has limited validity and must be renewed; it is the certificate number currently valid that is authoritative per lot.

Which organic markets should be prioritised for Tunisian oil?

As a priority, Germany (Europe's 1st organic market, strong requirement) and the United States (USDA NOP + strong private label appetite), then France, the Nordic countries and Canada. See importing to Germany and to the United States.

Can the Ecocert certificate accompany a sample?

Yes. An Ecocert certificate can be provided with the sample, alongside the lot's COA. This allows the buyer to verify certification and quality before ordering, and to have a reference sample.
