Launch your organic olive oil brand (Ecocert / USDA / EU)
How to launch your organic olive oil brand?
Launching an organic olive oil brand means having a Tunisian certified organic oil packaged under your own label, without owning a mill. You choose the grade, the variety, the packaging and the market; we produce, package and ship organic certified Ecocert (EU 2018/848), USDA NOP and EU organic, with a COA and certificate number per lot. Indicative filling price from €0.45/unit, on top of the cost of the organic oil (from ~€3.85/kg FOB).
Organic is the most profitable segment of private label: it commands a premium of about +24% and demand is exploding on premium markets. This page is your roadmap for a credible, certified organic brand. See also our general private label and the organic hub.
Why launch your brand as organic (and not conventional)
Organic is not an added extra: it is the highest-margin positioning of own-brand olive oil. The proofs to know (superlatives marked to be re-verified before commitment):
- Price premium ~+24% — organic commands markedly more than conventional → better margin for your brand.
- Exploding premium demand — Germany (No. 1 organic market in Europe ), USA (buoyant organic segment), France, Nordic countries.
- De facto organic terroir — arid climate, low pest pressure, extensive olive groves → Tunisia can produce organic at export scale (major world exporter of organic EVOO ).
- Double health argument — Chetoui often exceeds 250 mg/kg of polyphenols → eligible for the EFSA health claim (EU 432/2012) on European markets.
- Established certifiers — Ecocert present in Sfax, facilitating the audit of partner mills.
Signature message: launching your brand as organic means capturing the +24% premium and the premium markets, with the best-value Tunisian Mediterranean quality — certified Ecocert, USDA & EU.
The safeguard: never "organic" without a valid certificate
Before any project, the non-negotiable rule. A "naturally clean" orchard is not organic in the regulatory sense, and an organic certificate is not substituted from one market to another.
We never apply the "organic" mention on your brand without a valid certificate covering the plots and the mill. The certificate number (Ecocert / USDA NOP / EU) accompanies each lot, with its plot traceability. The logo alone is not enough: your organic label is only legal if the lot is genuinely certified for the target market.
Choosing the right organic framework for your market
Each market has its framework: one is not substituted for the other. This is the first decision of your organic brand project.
| Target market | Required framework | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| European Union / Germany | EU organic 2018/848 (Ecocert) | Euro-leaf logo + organisation no.; TRACES-NT certificate per imported lot |
| United States | USDA NOP | EU organic alone is not enough; EU-USA equivalence facilitates obtaining it |
| France & Southern Europe | EU organic 2018/848 (Ecocert) | Same framework as the EU, mature organic distribution |
| Multiple markets | Ecocert + USDA NOP combined | The common route to serve EU AND USA |
Many Ecocert-certified Tunisian mills also obtain the NOP: plan the framework from the scoping stage. Details on organic & Ecocert, the organic brand for Germany and the organic brand for the USA.
The 6-step process (with the organic audit)
How does an organic brand project unfold? In six steps, from defining the need to the first shipment — certification is anticipated from the outset.
- Scoping & organic framework — you specify grade, variety/blend, format, packaging, target market → organic framework (Ecocert/USDA/EU), volume and incoterm. The private label simulator gives an initial price order.
- Sample & COA — organic reference sample + certificate of analysis (IOC-approved lab); you validate the sensory profile and the certificate number.
- Quote & specifications — dated quotation (organic oil + filling + packaging), specifications and confidentiality (NDA).
- Organic label artwork — mandatory mentions + euro-leaf logo / USDA seal + organisation number, market language. An organic labelling error = a hold.
- Organic production & packaging — bottling under your label in storage separate from conventional, quality control, lot COA, certifications (organic + IFS/BRC if retail).
- Shipping — palletisation, export documents (invoice, packing list, B/L, EUR.1, COA, organic certificate + TRACES-NT for the EU) and tracking.
Allow generally 6 to 12 weeks between validation of the specifications and shipping, plus the organic audit lead time if the mill is not yet certified (indicative — to be confirmed per project).
Organic packaging: containers and options
Packaging makes 80% of shelf perception; in organic, it also carries the "clean & premium" message. Standard and custom containers available:
| Type | Common formats | Organic positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Marasca glass bottle | 250 / 500 / 750 ml | Premium, traditional look |
| Dorica glass bottle | 250 / 500 / 750 ml / 1 L | Organic fine grocery, gift |
| Metal (tinplate) can | 1 / 3 / 5 L | Optimal preservation, organic food service |
| PET / food-grade plastic | 1 / 2 / 5 L | Entry level, volume |
| Gift box / bag-in-box | custom | Corporate gift, organic e-commerce |
Options: anti-refill cap (non-refill), tamper-evident over-cap, screen printing, gift box, traceability QR code (strong with the organic consumer). Dark glass and tinplate better protect Chetoui's polyphenols. Useful density: 1 L of oil ≈ 0.913 kg. Compliant organic label: euro-leaf logo (EU) or USDA seal (USA) + organisation number mandatory.
MOQ: what minimum volume for an organic brand?
The MOQ (minimum order quantity) depends on the format and the personalisation. Indicative benchmarks — as organic storage is separate, the thresholds are close to conventional:
- Catalogue format, custom organic label: from ~1 pallet (a few hundred to ~1,000 units depending on the format).
- Standard bottle or can: often 3,000 to 6,000 units per SKU to optimise the cost.
- 100% custom packaging (mould, dedicated gift box): higher MOQ, tied to the packaging supplier's minimum.
- Organic bulk under label (you bottle): 1 flexitank (~22,000 L), 2 IBCs or 10 drums, in separate organic storage.
The higher the volume, the lower the unit cost. Estimate your break-even point and the organic premium with the private label simulator.
The +24% organic premium: the real margin lever
This is the central economic argument of an organic brand. Packaged organic commands around 17 TND/kg versus ~13.81 TND/kg for conventional bulk, i.e. a premium of about +24%.
Concretely, this premium flows favourably along the entire chain: better resale margin for your brand, while remaining competitive against Spanish (€4.1–4.5/kg in Jaén) and Italian (€6.5–7.0/kg in Bari) origins. Tunisian organic thus lets you display a premium positioning with a controlled cost at origin. Quantify the premium's impact on your margin with the private label simulator.
Certifications: organic + food safety
The certifications follow your market and your channel. Two families to combine for a credible organic brand:
- Organic: Ecocert / EU organic 2018/848 for Europe, USDA NOP for the USA — essential to sell "organic" (certification of the production method, not a chemical test).
- Food safety (retail / private label): IFS Food and BRCGS all but mandatory to list a brand in European mass retail, in addition to organic.
Depending on the market, add: FDA / FSVP (USA), kosher, halal, Arabic label (Gulf). Detail on organic & Ecocert.
We never apply a claim (organic, EFSA…) without a valid certificate. Each organic lot is delivered with its COA from an IOC-approved laboratory and its certificate number.
Confidentiality & ownership of your organic brand
Your project is yours, entirely:
- Confidential specifications and blend — protected by a confidentiality agreement (NDA) signed before any technical exchange.
- Your brand stays yours — you register it (INPI, EUIPO, WIPO depending on the market); we claim no right over it.
- Organic traceability — each lot is identified (certified plots, mill, separate storage, COA, certificate number) without ever disclosing your formula to third parties.

| Choose the right framework (Ecocert/USDA/EU) by market, require the valid organic certificate + number per lot, lock in quality consistency (COA + sample), IFS/BRC for retail, validate organic labelling, secure NDA & brand registration, leverage the organic premium (~+24% ). | Secure organic certification upstream (Ecocert/NOP audit), defend the packaged organic margin, quote in FOB, trace the plots and the separate storage, secure payment (deposit + confirmed LC), target premium markets (Germany, USA). |

FAQ — Launching your organic olive oil brand
How to launch your organic olive oil brand?
You define the product (grade, variety/blend, format, packaging, market → organic framework); we produce, package and ship organic certified Ecocert / USDA NOP / EU organic under your label, with a COA and certificate number per lot. Certification is anticipated from the scoping stage.
Which organic certification to choose for my brand?
It depends on the market: EU organic 2018/848 (Ecocert) for Europe (with TRACES-NT per lot), USDA NOP for the United States (EU organic alone is not enough), often both combined to serve the EU and USA. See organic & Ecocert.
How much does it cost to launch your organic olive oil brand?
The cost combines the organic oil price (from ~€3.85/kg FOB), the filling (from ~€0.45/unit), the packaging, the labelling and the organic audit if the mill is not already certified. Quantify yours with the private label simulator.
What is the price premium of organic in private label?
Organic commands about +24% vs conventional — packaged organic ~17 TND/kg vs bulk ~13.81. It is the main margin lever of an organic brand, well accepted by premium distribution (Germany, USA).
What is the MOQ for an organic brand?
From ~1 pallet for a custom organic label on a catalogue format, often 3,000 to 6,000 units per SKU for an optimal cost, more for 100% custom packaging. In organic bulk under label: 1 flexitank, 2 IBCs or 10 drums, in separate storage.
Is Ecocert enough to sell my organic brand in the United States?
No. To claim "organic" in the USA, USDA NOP certification is required; EU organic / Ecocert alone is not enough, even if the EU-USA equivalence facilitates the process. See the organic brand for the USA.
Do you also need an IFS or BRC certification in addition to organic?
To list an organic brand in European mass retail (private label), IFS Food or BRCGS are all but mandatory in addition to the organic certificate. For direct sale, e-commerce or organic fine grocery, it is not always required.
How to label an organic olive oil under my brand?
Depending on the market: euro-leaf logo + certifying organisation number (EU), USDA seal + "Organic" (USA, with Nutrition Facts), exact grade, origin, quantity, best-before date, lot. The organic logo is only legal if the lot is certified. An organic labelling error = a customs hold.
Does organic better protect my oil's polyphenols?
Organic certifies the production method, not the polyphenols. But choosing Chetoui (often > 250 mg/kg) and protective packaging (dark glass, tinplate, non-refill) preserves these polyphenols — eligible for the EFSA health claim in Europe (EU 432/2012). See the Chetoui variety.
Does the blend / recipe of my organic brand remain confidential?
Yes. Your specifications and your blend are covered by a confidentiality agreement (NDA) signed before the technical exchanges. We do not disclose your formula to any third party and can provide for a contractual exclusivity.
Who registers my organic brand?
You. The brand is yours: you register it with INPI (France), EUIPO (EU) or WIPO (international). We exercise no right over your brand, your name or your design.
What lead times to launch an organic brand?
Allow generally 6 to 12 weeks between validation of the specifications and the first shipment, plus the organic audit lead time if the mill is not already Ecocert/NOP certified (indicative — to be confirmed).
Can I get an organic sample before launching?
Yes, with its COA (IOC-approved lab) and its organic certificate number. It becomes your reference sample to compare the quality of each delivered lot and avoid any dispute on arrival.
