Bulk olive oil for cosmetics & soap-making — ingredient

What is bulk olive oil for cosmetics and soap-making?

Bulk olive oil for cosmetics is a supply of unpackaged oil — drums, IBC or flexitank — used as an ingredient in soaps (cold or hot saponification, Marseille soap, Aleppo-soap alternative), skincare oils, balms, natural cosmetics and spa preparations. The key issue is the stable quality, traceability and precise grade of the oil, not its taste. Zitouna Export supplies IOC/EU-certified Tunisian oil with per-lot COA. Indicative price from €3.80/kg FOB.

Let us be transparent from the start: cosmetics and soap-making are a niche market for olive oil compared with food, which absorbs the vast majority of volumes. We do not claim to be a specialised cosmetics supplier (COSMOS/perfumery specifications have their own requirements): we are a quality food-grade bulk exporter capable of supplying an olive oil ingredient with the grade and traceability suited to your formulation. We prefer to frame the need honestly rather than over-promise.

The challenge a soap-maker or cosmetics formulator faces on sourcing

For a soap-maker or a natural-cosmetics brand, olive oil as an ingredient raises four questions:

  • The grade and category — which type of oil for which use? Cosmetics do not need the same sensory profile as food, but stability and consistency matter. The expected grade must be specified (extra virgin, virgin, or per specification).
  • Traceability and naturalness — a "natural" or "organic" cosmetics brand must prove the origin and production method of its ingredients (INCI Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, organic certification if claimed).
  • Material consistency — a validated formulation (saponification value, colour, curing behaviour) requires an ingredient that does not drift from one lot to the next.
  • Volume suited to the niche — soap-makers and cosmetics brands often buy more modest volumes than the food industry: a few drums, one IBC, rather than a full flexitank.

Add to this density (1 L ≈ 0.913 kg) for calculations, packaging suited to small volumes, and documentary compliance on import.

Specifying the grade properly: a point of honour

In cosmetics, confusion over grade is common. We systematically specify what we deliver:

  • Extra virgin (EVOO) — acidity ≤ 0.80%, cold-pressed, unrefined: the highest-quality grade, relevant for a premium brand or an "extra virgin olive oil" claim on the pack.
  • Virgin — acidity ≤ 2.0%: often sufficient for soap-making where the oil is saponified, with a better material cost.
  • Refined or pomace oils — we do not present them as virgin. If your formulation tolerates them, they must be explicitly designated as such. No grade ambiguity in our quotations.

We do not supply "pomace oil" disguised as virgin: the actual grade is always written into the contract and proven by the COA.

Our proof for cosmetics and soap-making

  • Identified Tunisian origin — Mediterranean terroir, often thousand-year-old olive trees, low-intensity cultivation: a credible origin story for a natural brand.
  • Lot-level traceability — COA from an IOC-accredited laboratory (acidity, peroxide, K232/K270) and origin traceability.
  • Organic availableEcocert (EU 2018/848) / USDA NOP certified bulk, stored and filled separately from conventional.
  • Chemlali variety — mild, fluid oil, suited to skincare preparations; Chetoui rich in polyphenols (natural antioxidants) if your formulation values that argument.
  • Honest grade — we oversell nothing: the grade delivered is the one written into the contract, proven by COA.

Honesty: we do not deliver a cosmetics regulatory dossier (cosmetic safety data sheet, compliance with Regulation EC 1223/2009, COSMOS certification). We supply the olive oil ingredient and its food-grade COA; bringing your formula into cosmetics compliance is your responsibility or that of your subcontractor.

Steps to start a cosmetics supply

  1. Specification — you define the expected grade (extra virgin / virgin / other), the production method (conventional or organic), the volume and the packaging (drums, IBC).
  2. Sample & COA — we send a sample with its COA; you validate its compatibility with your formulation (saponification value, colour, behaviour).
  3. Dated quotation — delivered price, bulk format, grade confirmed in writing, incoterm.
  4. First delivery — drums or IBC with the lot COA, compared to the validated sample.
  5. Replenishment — flow suited to your production, grade and traceability held from one lot to the next.

A first batch of drums can ship within a few weeks after sample validation (indicative — to be confirmed depending on harvest and destination).

Buyer side / seller side

Buyer side (cosmetics / soap-making) Seller side (exporter)
Specify the grade expected and the use (saponification, skincare), validate the sample on your formulation, require a per-lot COA and traceability, claim organic only if the oil is certified, take on cosmetics compliance (1223/2009) on your side. Quote FOB/CIF, write the actual grade into the contract (never refined sold as virgin), provide COA and traceability, offer formats suited to the niche (drums, IBC), secure payment.

FAQ — Bulk olive oil for cosmetics & soap-making

Which olive oil grade for soap-making?

It depends on your positioning. Virgin (acidity ≤ 2.0%) is often enough for saponification, with a good material cost. Extra virgin suits a premium brand that claims "extra virgin olive oil" on the pack. We always specify the delivered grade in writing and prove it by COA.

Are cosmetics a large outlet for olive oil?

No, it is a niche market. Food absorbs the vast majority of olive oil volumes worldwide. Cosmetics and soap-making represent a modest share, which explains generally smaller order volumes (drums, IBC) than in the food industry.

Do you provide a cosmetics regulatory dossier?

No. We supply the olive oil ingredient and its food-grade COA (IOC-accredited lab), with traceability and specified grade. Cosmetics compliance of your formula (Regulation EC 1223/2009, product information file, possible COSMOS certification) is your responsibility or that of your formulator subcontractor.

What is the price of bulk olive oil for cosmetics?

From €3.80–4.00/kg FOB for the Tunisian origin. The price depends on grade, volume, format (drums/IBC/flexitank) and incoterm. Organic is slightly more expensive.

Do you offer organic olive oil for a natural brand?

Yes: Ecocert (EU 2018/848) / USDA NOP certified bulk, stored and filled separately from conventional to preserve the certification. This is essential if you claim "organic" on your cosmetic. See Ecocert organic certification and bulk organic oil.

Which packaging for small cosmetics volumes?

Drums 200/216 L (×40 per 20' container) and IBC 1,000 L suit soap-making and niche-cosmetics volumes. The flexitank (~22,000 L) only makes sense for significant production.

Which Tunisian variety for cosmetics?

Chemlali (South/Sfax) gives a mild, fluid oil, often suited to skincare preparations. Chetoui (North) is rich in polyphenols, natural antioxidants that some brands value. We can also offer a blend to suit your need.

Is the INCI name of olive oil provided?

Olive oil corresponds to the INCI Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil. We provide the origin, the grade and the COA; integrating the INCI name and the ingredient list into your cosmetic labelling is part of your compliance work.

Do you guarantee the oil does not drift from one lot to the next?

Yes, within contractual tolerances. A reference sample validated on your formulation, a reproducible blend and a per-lot COA limit drift (acidity, peroxide, grade). A lot outside tolerance is not shipped as compliant.

Do you sell pomace oil for soap-making?

We never sell it as virgin. If your formulation tolerates a refined or pomace oil (cheaper), it is explicitly designated as such in the contract and COA. No grade ambiguity: it is a point of honour.

How do I read the COA of a delivered lot?

The COA states acidity, peroxide, the K232/K270/ΔK coefficients and the grade. Our COA quality classifier confirms the IOC/EU category. For cosmetics, you mainly validate the stability and consistency of the lot against your reference sample.

What documents accompany an export order?

Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading (B/L), EUR.1 certificate of origin, health certificate and COA (IOC-accredited lab). See certifications & quality process.
